Easy DIY Wrapping Paper

Easy DIY Wrapping Paper-Only need 2 things

I was needing to wrap a book for my son's class party and couldn't get to the wrapping paper in the attic.  I was trying to think of what to do to solve my problem and I remembered throwing out the brown paper that came in a package we got in the mail recently.  I got it out of the box that was still sitting outside in the garage.  The paper was in perfect condition and what a great way to recycle!  Now that I had paper I had to decide how to make it look nice.  I chose the easy way and let my son add foam Christmas stickers to the package.  I was so surprised at how nice it came out.  I think we will be wrapping more gifts like this.  you could even do this for a birthday gift and use different themed stickers.  Hope this idea may help you out too.

How to Make Pink Peppermint Playdough AND The Kid's Co-op#36

We made pink peppermint playdough last year and still play with it!  We made a new batch this year to sell and raise money to support breast cancer.  My kids and I enjoy the smell and enjoy it every time we get it out.

What you need: 1 1/2 c corn starch, 1/2 c flour, 2 c water, 2 tsp cream of tarter, 1 c salt, 1 Tbs oil.  Extras- pink food coloring(we had gel this yr.  last yr we just used a small amount of liquid red and got a pink color).  and peppermint extract or essential oils. You can also add glitter if you would like.  Sauce pan, measuring cups, mixing spoon, and wax paper.

What to do:  Get out a sauce pan.  I have an old one I kept just for playdough.  However, the pan does clean out easy for me in the dishwasher.  Gather ingredients and measure and pour all dry ingredients in the pan.  Then add oil and water.  Sometimes I add food coloring to the water and mix before putting in with the dry ingredients.  You can also add glitter to dry ingredients if you would like.  Once you have all ingredients in the pan, turn on med high heat.  Continue mixing the whole time you are making it.  It will take a few minutes before it starts to stick to your spoon. This is a good sign.  Continue stirring and as the playdough cooks it will become one big glob in the pan .  My spoon is always stuck in the middle of the playdough.  I take the spoon and pick up the playdough out of the pan and put it on wax paper to cool.  I would let it sit out at least 30 minutes before you knead it and let the kids play with it.

I make playdough often by myself.  At times I do let my oldest help me with this process.  He gets to help measure and pour in the ingredients to the pan.  I do the stirring because the pan and mix is hot.  I then will not let him knead the playdough until it has cooled.  He has a lot of fun helping when he gets a chance. He always has fun playing in the playdough no matter if he helped make it or not!

Christmas bath with peppermint ice cubes

We love tub time fun at our house.  I like to keep it simple.  This makes it easy for me to prep and clean up.  This is key for me with 3 young children.  In our 10 Christmas Ideas Kids Love you will find a fun Christmas bath from Growing a Jeweled Rose.  I knew we had to do one too.  We did a easy Halloween bath and I hoped to do more Holiday type ones after that.  So here is what I came up with for our Christmas bath.

My oldest has been on a candy cane thing lately.  With this in mind I thought we could do a peppermint/candy cane bath theme.

What we used and did: Colored & scented ice is always a hit in the tub with my kids.  With this in mind I made peppermint colored ice for their bath.  I just added food coloring and peppermint extract to the water before freezing.  We had window clings that I put in the tub for decorations and they can be played with.  I also added some plastic candy canes we got from dollar tree for our Christmas sensory bin.  Last, I let the boys share a candy cane when they got in the tub.  They just loved their bath and we have done this a few more times since.  We hope you may have some tub time fun too.

Water Bottle Christmas Trees

I am one of those people that love bottled water and I drink a lot of it.  Because of this we have tons of plastic water bottles out in our recycling container.  I have been trying to think of ways to use them.  A bottle Christmas tree came to mind.  We had a lot of fun making these and I thought they came out just cute.
What we used:  plastic bottle, paint, & pom pom.
What we did:  I have a toddler and preschooler- I squirted green paint down the bottle and put the lid back on and then let both my boys shake them up.  Once the bottle was coated we moved on to adding finger print lights of different colors.  My mom was here so she helped my oldest while I helped my younger son.  Last they glued on the pom pom stars.  Now we have Christmas tree decorations for our table.

Elf on the shelf- making snowman for the kids

Here is one of the silly things our elf on the shelf has been up to.  The kids woke up to find that the elves had made a donut snowman for them.  They took tooth picks and used them as arms and nose and then used frosting to add m&m eyes.  The kids loved this.  What fun will they get into next?

Brother books- guest post from All Done Monkey

One Special Day by Lola SchaeferSince Jaime and I are both welcoming babies into our families this winter, I thought it would be fun to share some of the books my little Monkey and I have enjoyed reading about being a big brother. As in so many other instances, I have found that good books are a wonderful way to start conversations with my son. They not only give him the vocabulary to talk about new concepts but also help him understand and begin to imagine the world in new ways - certainly useful when talking about bringing home a new sibling! I am absolutely in love with One Special Day by Lola M. Schaefer. It is so much fun and really speaks to little ones on their level. Spencer is a typically active young boy - running, jumping, climbing, and generally having lots of fun. My little Monkey loves yelling out the names of all the animals with which Spencer identifies: He is loud like an ELEPHANT, fast like a HORSE, and so on. Yet, on one special day, Spencer is "quiet and waiting," as he gets to meet his baby brother for the first time. I swear I get teary-eyed whenever I get to this part. The illustration of Spencer holding the baby is so dear that it is hard not to be emotional (and I might be a tad bit hormonal...perhaps). Most importantly, my Monkey goes on this journey right along with Spencer, and we can talk about how he will also get to hold his baby brother soon and practice being gentle with him. Be sure not to miss the drawings on the inside covers of the book, especially those at the end, which show Spencer and his now slightly older little brother playing together and - as Monkey always points out - laughing together. This section, more than anything, has helped my little Monkey get excited about Baby Brother's arrival, and he often talks about how he will also play drums with Baby Brother, splash in the water, and so on. La Silla de Pedro by Ezra Jack KeatsAnother great book is La Silla de Pedro by Ezra Jack Keats (available in English as Peter's Chair). This story deals with the jealousy older siblings often feel as they see their old things suddenly converted and used for a new baby. After watching his father paint his old highchair and crib pink for his baby sister, Pedro decides to take his favorite chair (still blue!) and run away. When he discovers that he no longer fits in the chair, however (and when he smells his mama's cooking), he decides to return home, where he can play games with his mother and sit at the big table just like the grownups. In the end, he even offers to help his father paint his old chair pink :) We haven't quite come upon this issue with our Monkey yet, but reading this book has helped us lay the foundation for the conversations I know will come. Digger Man - Andrea and DavidThis next book was one I discovered just by accident. My Monkey loves all kinds of trucks, so when I saw Digger Man by Andrea Zimmerman and David Clemesha on the shelf at the library, I knew I had found a winner. What's great about this book is that the relationship between the brothers is woven into the story so seamlessly. As the main character tells us all about the digger trucks he loves, we see how he always brings his baby brother along for the ride, even giving him his own hard hat to wear! It was after reading this book - which quickly became a favorite - that my Monkey started talking about how he would show his trucks to Baby Brother, too and teach him all about being a Digger Man, just like the boy in the book. Other books in this series include Fire Engine Man and Train Man. How did you prepare your child for the arrival of a new sibling?

Jingle Bells and Jars= simple fun

Some days my kids come up with their own entertainment and that is how we got jingle bells and jars.  We bought a box of jingle bells at the Dollar Tree and used them in our Christmas sensory box.  After they got through playing that day I put the jingle bells together down in a paper cup that was out to put up for another time.  The next day my toddler saw the cup on the counter and asked for it.  He then began playing with them.  We sat together and sang jingle bells.  He then started putting the bells in a jar from his kitchen.  My preschooler now wanted to come play too.  He was not as entertained as my toddler was with this but had some fun too.  My toddler kept putting the jingle bells back and forth in the jars.  He kept putting the lids on and taking them off of the jars.  He also ran through the house jingling with the jingle bell jars.  He had me and my oldest son laughing.  He had so much fun with this simple activity I just had to share his fun with you.  I hope that you and your kids can have some fun with this too.

Busy Bag Activities- guest post from Two Big Two Little

I'm Tricia from Two Big Two Little, where I share crafts and activities that I do with my children. My kids range in age from 1 to 15, so we usually have a variety of end results to everything :) I'm very excited to be guest posting here at Frogs & Snails & Puppy Dog Tails today :)

Busy Bag Activities

Busy Bag Activities
We have participated in a busy bag swap a few months ago and Sammie really has a lot of fun with some of the busy bag activities that we have received. While looking around on Pinterest, I found some more that I thought Sammie would really like as well. I thought I would share some of her favourite busy bag activities that I have made for her. Sammie loves the book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" So when I saw the printables at 1+1+1=1, I knew she would have a lot of fun with them. I decided to start with the Heads and Tails section from their Brown Bear printable (I made these up a while ago and I've noticed that their graphics for this printable set have changed since I printed them). I printed them onto cardstock and laminated them after cutting them out. Sammie really likes matching them together, as well as mis-matching them on purpose to see what funny looking animals she can make lol. These can also be used as a memory game. I think I might eventually make some more busy bag activities using the Brown Bear printables. Busy Bag Activities
She also really likes these popsicle stick puzzles that I made for her. For these puzzles, I printed some pictures off and glued them onto the tongue depressor sized popiscle sticks. Once the glue was dry, I used an exacto knife and cut the paper between each stick. When I first made them for her, sometimes she had trouble figuring out which piece went with which puzzle. So to make it slightly easier for her, I coloured the end of each stick with a bit of marker, so each puzzle has a certain colour. I have noticed that as the puzzles get played with some of the paper has started to peel off the sticks. So I think I would put a coat of mod podge or glue over the top of the paper before I cut the puzzles apart. Busy Bag Activities Another favourtie of our busy bag activities is this colour wheel. For this activity, I got some paint chip cards, two of each colour. I drew a circle on some cardstock paper and divided into approximately 8 equals parts. In each section I glued a different paint chip colour. I found 8 clothes pins and glued a strip of each paint chip colour onto one side of the clothes pin. I then laminated the circle and cut it out. When I first made this activity for her, Sammie had a bit of trouble figuring out how to work the clothes pin, but after showing her a couple of times, she got them to work. To make it a bit trickier, I wrote the colour word on the opposite side of the clothes pins. I probably should have wrote the words on the paint chip colours as well. But I didn't think of doing the words on the clothes pins until after it was laminated. Sammie really likes matching the colours together. She doesn't really pay any attention to the words on the clothes pins. lol Busy Bag Activities Sammie's favourite of all the busy bag activities, both ones I've made and ones from busy bag swaps, is this button snake. To make this activity, I cut a length of ribbon and sewed buttons to each end of the ribbon. I cut a variety of colours of felt pieces into squares and cut an 1" long slit in the center of each felt square. I decided to sew one of the felt squares onto one end of the ribbon to keep the felt pieces from coming off the end. I made 4 squares of each colour. When I first started making this activity, my plan was to make a variety of shapes from the felt as well, but my cutting skills just aren't that great, so they ended up being all squares lol This busy bag activity is great for working on fine motor skills, colouring sorting, pattern making and just fun :) Sammie really likes sorting the felt pieces into patterns and then putting the pattern onto the ribbon. She also really likes just stringing the felt pieces on in any random order lol Busy Bag Activities
Sammie has alot of fun with these busy bag activities and many more as well. They work great to keep her occupied while I'm busy or while we are waiting somewhere other than home. I throw a couple of them in my purse and pull them out when we need them.

Christmas Sensory Bin-easy diy from the dollar tree

My kids love to get in the holiday spirit with a sensory bin.  On our last trip to the dollar tree, my oldest son and I picked out a few things to make one for Christmas.  So, here is our easy to make Christmas sensory bin.
what you need: white tinsel, little presents. jingle bells, plastic candy canes, and gift bows.

What to do:  find a box, rubbermaid, bowl, or for us we used the plastic lid off the foil pan I cooked our Thanksgiving turkey in.  Add the Christmas sensory items to the container.  Last, set it out and let the kids play.

Both my toddler and preschooler enjoyed playing with the sensory bin.  They didn't really like the tinsel so I removed it.  I thought afterwards that torn tissue paper may have been better.  The great thing about sensory play is that you can use a wide variety of things to play in.  You make it up as you go.  We hope you and your kids may have some sensory fun too.

Sensory Snow-how to make

Sensory Snow-how to make

I have been seeing a lot of snow/Christmas related posts lately.  Two have caught my eye.  One is Snow Dough from The Imagination Tree and the other is Peppermint Oatmeal from Train up a Child.  After seeing these fun sensory substances I wanted to make something for the boys( 4yr & 1.5yr) to play with.  Here is what I came up with for our snow recipe.

What I used: 2 c corn starch(in the US), 2 c flour, 1.5 c oats, 1/2-3/4 c canola oil, & 1tsp peppermint extract.  Update: I forgot to add peppermint extract to this list.  This gives it a nice scent.  With a newborn I am blaming this on lack of sleep, lol.

What to do: mix all together in a bowl.  I taped a plastic table cloth down to our deck and dumped it out for the kids.  Of course my boys wanted nothing but trucks to play with in the sensory snow. We use toys that are meant to stay dirty or can be easily washed.  Do not use good toys for this that you may not want to get dirty.  You can use what you and your kids enjoy with this sensory snow.

My boys have been playing in this all week and just love it. It is messy!  I put them in what we call "dirt clothes" and let them play.  I then take their clothes and shoes off outside before we come in.  I wash the clothes.  Since they have been playing outside in their crocs I wash those too.  I am surprised the "snow has not blown away but the pile is getting smaller and smaller each day. This has been a big hit at my house.  We hope it will be at yours too.

Tortilla Face

My son is a big toy story fan.  From the scene were the Mr potato head uses a tortilla as a body is were I got the idea for us to create a tortilla face.  I thought it could be a fun way to spend sometime together with my son.

What you need: tortilla ( I left ours out to get hard before we used it), google eyes, glue, pom pom, marshmallows, & glitter glue.  The fun part is you can use just about whatever you want to create your face.

What to do:  set out all the supplies you will use in a tray.  Now have the kid or kids come to the table.  Next I explanied to my son what we were going to make.  Then I let my son create his face.  He had fun tasting the marshmellows and loved putting glue all over.

Here is his fun face he created.  We had fun with this craft.  I hope that you and your kids may enjoy this fun idea too.

Here is what our elf on the shelf has been up to

We now have 2 elves on the shelf.  We started out last year with one for our 2 sons.  We now have 3 sons and thought it would be good to add one more elf on the shelf.  The boys have helped name them Patch and Scout.  My oldest said that Patch brought his brother along this year.  My boys are 4 yr, 1.5yr, and newborn.  The 2 older kids are loving these elves.

Here is what the elves have been up to:

*First day the elves came back they were on the fire place.  They left a note and a bucket of Christmas pajamas for the kids.  The older boys thought this was great.

*Another day the kids found the elves fishing in the kitchen.  I got this idea from pinterest.  My oldest thought this was so funny.

*On this day the boys found Patch & Scout hanging from our lights in the dinning room.  On the table was spelled out, with marshmallows,  BE GOOD.  Both boys liked this.

What will they do next?
