Stuffed animal hide and seek

When my mom comes over my oldest has to play stuffed animal hide and seek with her.  It is a simple idea am sure lots of families play.  My son is 3yr and he loves it, he will play over and over with her.  She goes and hides the stuffed animals and he looks for them.  Sometimes he trades with her and they do the opposite.  It is always a good day for him when his Nannie comes over to play!

My oldest and his Nannie!

Homemade Bubbles & Snake Maker

I pinned a recipe for homemade bubbles some time ago and today we just got around to trying it out. Daddy was home so I had a few extra minuets to read the blog and get the stuff together.  We also got to enjoy some time with daddy blowing bubbles! The blog list 2 recipes.  I only had supplies to make one.  And it worked just fine. The recipe came from Come Together Kids.  She also listed a bubble snake maker and we tried that too.

What you need: 2 1/2 c water, 1/2 c corn syrup, & 1/2 c dawn dish soap.

What to do:  mix water and corn syrup together and microwave for 4 min, then add the dish soap.  Mix well.  I added it to an empty bubble bottle we had.  Then go blow bubbles.  Some people say this recipe attracts bees...  I didn't notice any today but we didn't get to stay out long due to the wind.

The other recipe is 1 gallon  hot water, 1/4 c glycerin, ( I would think this is liquid glycerin. I have solid glycerin we used to make soap but don't think that would work) and 1 c dawn dish soap.  Mix gently together and let sit over night in an open container.  Use the next day.  Again we did not try this one yet because we did not have the glycerin.  But heard it is better, look forward to trying it in the future and will update you on how it works.
This was the only picture I got of the bubbles but you see it works.

The bubble snake maker.
What you need: a water bottle, old sock or wash cloth, rubber band.  What to do:  cut bottom of bottle off and wrap sock around with rubber band.  Put a little dish soap and water in bowl.
Then take the bottle and dip it in water and soap mix and blow out of mouth opening to make "a  bubble snake".

Ours didn't look like a snake but it was fun.  Hope to get back out on a better day to blow more bubbles!

Hope you can enjoy some bubble fun too!

Homade Hand Sanitizer

I love trying out diy products.  So when I came across hand sanitizer that was great for kids and nursing mom's I was excited and ready to try it out.  I would like to try the one with alcohol one day but haven't gotten around to it yet.  In this post you will see the decorated container I put it in for my sister in law.  I had been taking store bought hand sanitizer and decorating the bottles and gifting them to teacher, principles, family members, and my son's pediatrician's office. I did this during Christmas.  People that use it on a daily basis.  I thought it was a great idea to jazz up something that sits on their desk or counters anyways.  I will try to get some pictures of the ones we have and post them later. This is the site I got the recipe from.

What you need: 1c pure aloe vera gel, 1-2 tsp witch hazel, 1/4 tsp pine and lavender essential oils(this combo is what makes it sanitize).  If you are not a nursing mother or pregnant you can use tee tree oil.  You can add more scents to this it says but I thought the 2 together was very strong!
If you are just looking for a good smelling and cheap hand sanitizer add essential oils you like to your store bought hand sanitizer.  I have done that too.

What to do:  mix the ingredients together and put in container or pump to store.

Sensory Painting- paint with spices and jello

Our inspiration for "sensory paint" came from this blog http://www.makedoandfriend.com/2012/04/sensory-spice-painting.html.  My son was wanting to wait this afternoon and I had seen a post about sensory paint so I went and scanned the post to see if we had the stuff we needed and we did.  I asked my son did he want to try something new and he said yes.  Here is how we did ours and what we used.  It was messy but they both had fun.

Sensory Painting- paint with spices and jello

What you need:

muffin pan, spices( I just looked in our pantry and pulled stuff out: seasoning salt, cinnamon, ginger...)  I think anything would work.  I would avoid pepper or hot tasting spice in case the kids want to taste.  I also had some parsley flakes.  Cardstock paper or thick paper, cup with water, paint brushes, and glue.  Oh yeah jello if you have some.  This was just something I did so my youngest could enjoy himself but my oldest enjoyed it too.  You could use pudding.

What to do:

fill up muffin pan with spices & fill up cup with water.  Put paper out and let your child dip the paint brush in water and then the spices to paint on paper.  With the jello just scoop some out on the paper and let them mash it around!
In the blog I read they used glue to make a design.  I took the glue and wrote the boys names and then add spices to it and dusted off the extra in the trash can.  Big brother then wanted to glue on his paper and he added spices with a spoon and then he added water and painted it making a great big masterpiece  :-)  A good mess too, lol.  My youngest was covered in jello but I had never seen him sit quiet like that before when I have given him something to do.  I would say this was a success at our house.  Hope you can have fun with this activity too.

They both had a lot of fun with this.

Liquid chalk paint

When I saw this idea for liquid chalk at http://domesticcharm.blogspot.com I just couldn't wait to try it out!  We love playing with chalk over here.  We made this months ago and really enjoyed it. We put it in a muffin pan and had  multiple colors.  We used paint brushes and painted the drive way. I looked forward to doing it again and it seems the time is now!  This week I saw a new idea for using liquid chalk at http://innerchildfun.com/  and thought we would try it this way.  Who doesn't want to squirt liquid chalk around?

What you need: Equal parts cornstarch to water, food coloring and bottles that will squirt.(I had a baby wash bottle, a tummy yummy bottle, and a dish soap bottle.) I just made my liquid chalk the way we made it the first time. (from the first blog listed)  The second blog made it another way but same ingredients.

What to do: mix cornstarch and water together then add food coloring. I think one bottle I used 1 1/2 cups of both and the other two bottles I used 1 cup of each.  Fill up bottles with mix. Then add food coloring to bottles and mix. Last go have some fun!!!!
My youngest son was taking a nap and my oldest here in the photo was dying to go out and play.  It was a cloudy day here in GA, so we added some color to it with liquid chalk!

I don't usually add this many photos of the same activity but they all show how much fun he was having.

He was covered by the end.  Mommy was a little messy too.  But it was fun watching him play.  His clothes came clean after washing.  I did wash them as soon as we came in.

Liam's masterpiece!  I only wished I had more bottles so he could have kept going.  Maybe next time.

How to clean your washing machine

I have been looking at my washer every time I put a load in(and that is a lot) and think this washer is nasty.  So when I came across a "how to clean your washer", I decide to read it and then put it to use.  I follow this lady on pinterest and she is the one that posted it.  She has a great website.  This is the link http://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2012/04/how-to-clean-your-top-loader-washing.html.

I do not have a front loader washer but she did post a how to on them also here is the link http://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2012/02/how-to-fix-smelly-washing-machine.html

What you need in picture above.

This is what I did:  Take and put 1 Quart of bleach in your washer and fill with hot water.  Let wash about a min, then turn off and let set for an hour.  I went ahead and pulled my fabric softener tube out(I had no idea they came off!! NOTE THAT NOT ALL OF THEM DO, BUT MINE DID)  I took it to my sink and filled it with hot water and washed a little with a rag.  Then filled with hot water and left sitting in the sink.  I came back about 15-20 min later and continued to wash it out with vinegar and hot water until it was as clean as I could get it.  When the hour was up on the washer I went and turned it on a normal cycle.  When it was done I added one quart of distilled white vinegar to the washer repeated the same steps as with the bleach.  While the timer was on this time I got a scrubber, rag, and toothbrush and started cleaning the inside of the washer, the lid, the bleach cup, and the inside of the fabric softener cup that the tube I pulled out went down in.  I just used the vinegar water that was in the washer.  When I was done I turned the washer back on.  When the washing cycle was over, I now had a clean washing machine!!!
